  • Foreign Nationals Intending to work, do volunteer work or internship/training in Kenya

All foreign personnel coming to work in Kenya must have an entry permit, also referred to as “work permit”. A foreigner worker’s dependants (spouse and family) require dependants’ passes. In both cases, application has to be made to the Director of Immigration services in Kenya.

Non-citizens also require Aliens Registration certificates and should obtain re-entry passes if they travel outside Kenya.

All these permits are usually valid for 2 years.

  • Travellers going to Kenya for business meetings and conferences require a Business Visa. This category of traveller does not require a work Permit.
  • However, for internship/training or work, it should be noted that a Work Permit is required whether the activity is remunerated or not.
  • For such Permits, the company/organization receiving/sending the foreigner to Kenya should contact directly the Department of Immigration in Nairobi. The foreigner needs to have the Permit before s/he starts the Job, internship/training or volunteer work in Kenya.
