History made as Kenyan husband and wife duo wins the Paris Marathon

The 41st edition of the Schneider Electric Paris Marathon was won by a Kenyan couple on 9th April, 2017. Paul Lonyangata, 24 years old, won the men’s marathon in 2 hours 6 minutes and 10 seconds while his wife Purity Rionoripo won the women’s marathon, in 2hours 20 minutes. They made history by being the first couple to win a marathon. Kenyan Minister of Sports, Culture and Arts, Dr. Hassan Wario, H.E Salma Ahmed Kenya’s Ambassador to France and H.E George Godia, Kenya’s Ambassador to UNESCO were on hand to receive the winners.

Kenya took the first three positions of the men’s marathon race. Mr. Stephen Chebogout and Mr. Solomon Yego took the second and third position respectively making it an all Kenyan podium.

In the women marathon race, the first two positions went to Kenya while the third went to Ethiopia. The Names of the first three in order of ranking are, Purity Rionpripo followed by Agnes Barsono and Ethiopian Flomena Cheyech.
